Step inside downtown Siloam Springs’ newest little gem, The Storybook Bakery, and you’re instantly wrapped in the smell of cinnamon rolls and cupcakes. Trays of sweets line the counter, all baked by owner Maggie Bishop, waiting for you to choose the perfect treat.
Just a few months after her July 1 opening, Maggie is living her dream; well, at least half of it. The bookstore-slash-bakery owner has always imagined running her own bookstore. Shelves in her shop are lined with all kinds of titles to explore. When asked for a favorite, she had a hard time choosing, but said “A Bride Most Begrudging” by Deeanne Gist.
“I’ve always wanted to own my own bookstore,” she said, then laughed. “I did not want to own a bakery.”

But life had other plans. Years ago, Maggie worked in the same space when it was known as Downtown Bakery, owned by her sister and mom. Through high school and summer breaks from college, she helped bake and serve. When the bakery changed hands, her mom stayed on as a silent partner. Then in May, the business went up for sale again, just as Maggie graduated from College of the Ozarks with a degree in Business Management. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.
Now she’s blending her love of books with her baking background.

Maggie’s favorite dessert is cookies, especially chocolate ones. But her customers might say the cinnamon rolls are the real stars. They’re a weekly staple, while her cupcake, bar, and sweet roll flavors change often.
“I try to change it up, bring a variety — people seem to enjoy that,” she said. “People are always like, ‘What’s the new sweet roll?’ It makes it fun.”
